FAQs
Are 1:1 sessions or group classes better?
Both have their place, but 1:1 sessions can be fully tailored to you and your dog’s specific needs. In a private session, you’ll have the trainer’s undivided attention for the full hour, rather than sharing time with several other participants. This means you’ll typically get more hands-on guidance, cover more material, and often make progress in fewer sessions compared to a group class.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on your training goals, your dog’s needs, and how consistent you are with practice between lessons. With patience, clear reward timing, and regular practice, you may only need a few sessions to master the skills you’d like to focus on. However, there are no quick fixes in dog training — more complex behaviours or challenges may require additional sessions to see lasting results.
Are 1:1s or group classes more cost effective?
Group classes can look like the cheaper option at first glance, but it’s worth considering how the trainer’s time is divided. In a group of 5 or more, you may only receive about 10 minutes of direct guidance per session. For example, a 6-week block of group classes at £25 per session costs £150, but you’ll only get around 60 minutes of one-to-one trainer time in total. By comparison, a private 1:1 session costs around £60 for a full 60 minutes of the trainer’s undivided attention. Because of this focused input, you may reach your goals more quickly in fewer sessions, which can actually make 1:1s the more cost-effective option in the long run.
Why shouldn't trainers make guarantees or promises?
While we use ethical, science-backed, positive reinforcement techniques that have been proven effective time and time again, every dog is an individual. Each has their own needs, personality, genetics, environment, and past experiences that influence how they learn and respond. Because of this, there are no “magic wands” in dog training. It would be unfair and misleading for any trainer to promise a set number of sessions or guaranteed results. Instead, our role is to provide proven methods, adapt them to your dog’s unique situation, and support you in making real, lasting progress.
Do I have to block book sessions?
No—there’s absolutely no pressure to block book. Training should move at a pace that works for both you and your dog. Some clients prefer to book once a month, while others choose more frequent sessions. You’re welcome to book as and when it suits your lifestyle and goals.
What training methods do I use?
I use force-free, science-backed positive reinforcement techniques. Training with kindness helps build your dog’s trust in you and strengthens your bond. Research shows that any behaviour can be taught using positive reinforcement—there’s no need for harsh or outdated methods. Scientific studies also demonstrate that dogs trained this way show fewer stress-related behaviours, making learning more enjoyable and effective.
My dog has been through training before, can you still help?
Absolutely! Even if your dog has previous training, we can still help reinforce, refresh, or build upon what they've already learned. Every dog is different, and sometimes they just need a new approach, more consistency, or help with specific behaviours that may have developed since their last training. I’ll assess your dog’s current skill level and customize our training plan to suit both of your needs.
Should I try scentwork with my dog?
Yes! Scentwork is a fantastic activity for most dogs — it taps into their natural instincts, builds confidence, and provides excellent mental stimulation. It’s suitable for dogs of all breeds, ages, and energy levels, including reactive or anxious dogs who may not thrive in more traditional group settings. Whether you're looking for a fun hobby or a new way to bond with your dog, scentwork is a rewarding and enriching choice.
Where do sessions take place?
Sessions typically take place in your home or out and about in suitable public spaces, depending on your dog’s needs. Workshops are held at a variety of indoor and outdoor venues, chosen to provide the best environment for learning and fun.
